It enabled her to know her grandfather before she even existed and to 'hear his voice' again as she had forgotten how he sounded after he died when she was nine.
***
'Lorna's discovery of Grandpa's diary was a crucial turning point in the writing of Bad Blood: '...what about the story that Grandma had blackmailed Grandpa for years, by threatening to show his private diary to the Bishop unless he handed over part of his stipend every quarter? Well yes, said my father, that was certainly true. But how do you know? I asked. Simple, he said, I've got the diaries, two of them...' (Bad Blood)
For Lorna, the diaries were '...a bit like eavesdropping on the beginnings of my world...' (Bad Blood) What she learned about her grandpa's oscillation between hopelessness and wickedness made part of the of writing her memoir not unlike the unravelling of a detective story.'
[STS]</text>
